Scrubber installed on MV FRISIANA
The MV FRISIANA is now outfitted with a scrubber of Value Maritime. With this scrubber we contribute to green shipping. This sollution results in exhausts to be for 99% free of sulphur, 90% clean of pm and 10% less CO2!
Late November 2019 we decided to purchase one scrubber and agreed two options. During the second half of March 2020 we started to install the scrubber on MV Frisiana. On the 29th of March the vessel sailed again. Excellent preparation and cooperation with Value Maritime, Wolfard & Wessels, Alewijnse, Wierda and Lloyds Register resulted in installation within two weeks! When we scheduled this project we could not imagine the different world we are in today. Despite the COVID-19 and subsequently measures taken during the installation works we only had minor delays. We thank all people involved!
With installing the scrubber we are operating more environmental friendly and on our way to achieve the set goals for 2050! It also fits in our strategy to contribute to green shipping. The relatively small prefabricated, “plug and play” scrubber filters the sulphur and ultrafine particulate matter from the exhaust gasses and reduces the CO2 impact. The investment is ultimately to be re-earned by the price difference between high sulphur fuels and low sulphur fuels.
Scrubbers do work like washing machines for the exhaust that comes out of the ships engine. Hugh amount of fresh salt seawater is pumped inside the scrubber which is used to wash out both sulphur and particular matter. During the washing process a chemical process takes place whereby the sulphur is turned into sulphate. Sulphate is an element that occurs naturally in seawater in big amounts. The wash-water is discharged into seawater under strict regulations. At the same time the exhaust gas that comes out the funnel is ‘White smoke” and 99% clean of sulphur and 90% clean of particular matter. Also the total CO2 emission is more than 10% less compared to refined Marine Gas Oil.
